Defining IT & technology terms

Relational data

Relational data refers to structured information that reflects the relationship between each data point in a tabular format. Each data instance is defined through a row and each property, or item that denotes the relationship between the data points, is defined as a column. Relationships are based on how the data interacts together.

Relational databases are needed to host relational data. Common relational databases include:

  • Microsoft SQL Server
  • Oracle Database
  • MySQL
  • IBM DB2

Relational databases are often used by businesses to track inventories, process ecommerce transactions, manage customer information and more. Traditionally, relational databases have been stored on premises using data centers. Modern data center platforms and the cloud have created many efficiencies around accessing and managing relational databases.
