NIST Framework

The NIST Framework is a set of guidelines and processes that helps organizations assess and improve their cybersecurity stance. Developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the NIST Framework is a system that provides recommendations and best practices to help businesses prioritize their security efforts and create an actionable plan to improve their cybersecurity programs.

The five key functions of the NIST Framework include:

  • Identify — establish an understanding of cybersecurity risks
  • Protect — develop cybersecurity safeguards
  • Detect — recognize threats in a timely manner
  • Respond — determine actions when a threat is detected
  • Recover — restore operations after a cyberattack

The Framework is scalable for organizations of all sizes — from small businesses just starting their cybersecurity efforts to Fortune 500 companies with sophisticated programs. The NIST Framework is popular across organizations because it is clear, approachable, comprehensive and customizable.
