Device provisioning
Device provisioning is the safe and secure setup and distribution of IT equipment. Device provisioning is one of the first steps in the IT lifecycle process, ensuring the device works seamlessly within the IT environment.
Traditional device provisioning uses imaging, which replaces the pre-installed Operating System (OS) with whatever version an organization uses. Any software the end user needs will also be installed. The device is then tagged for tracking and sent to the end user. This can often be a manual process.
Cloud-based provisioning streamlines the process. IT first registers the device’s serial number and matches it with a user persona. When the user boots the device, they are guided through the deployment process, including installing the right OS version and any required software, with minimal help. Instead of removing old software, like with many imaging processes, cloud-based provisioning updates add on to what was already on the device.
Cloud-based device provisioning is a useful strategy for hybrid workforces, where IT sends devices to multiple locations. Cloud-based provisioning promotes self-service, while also getting devices operational faster.
