Defining IT & technology terms

Big data

Big data represents the increasing amount of digital information that is being created, collected and analyzed. Data is produced and collected from an increasing number of sources, including software, hardware, audio and video. Organizations leverage big data to identify trends and discover insights to use in day-to-day decision-making.

Big data is large in volume, collected quickly and diverse in format. It is increasingly valuable as internet services and tech devices create an easy way to collect and interpret information using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). Companies in every industry leverage big data to help customers and improve business operations.

Big data often requires computational power beyond the capabilities of traditional processing software and on-premises storage. Modern technology — like the cloud, flash storage and AI — enables big data analysis and storage.
